Survival Guide (2026 Edition)
Welcome to Daily Reality NG, where we break down real-life issues with honesty and clarity. I'm Samson Ese, founder of Daily Reality NG. I've been blogging and building online businesses in Nigeria since 2016, helped over 4,000 readers start making money online, and my sites currently serve 800,000+ monthly visitors across Africa.
Look, I'm not gonna lie to you.
December 2023. I'm sitting in my one-room apartment in Warri, Delta State, staring at my phone screen like it owed me money. NEPA don carry light since 6am. My neighbor's generator dey cough like person wey get TB. The heat? Ah. That kind heat wey dey make you question your life choices. My account balance: ₦12,400. Rent due in 8 days: ₦180,000.
I remember thinking to myself that Tuesday evening, around 7:32pm (yes, I remember the exact time because that's when my phone battery hit 4% and I realized I couldn't even charge it), "Samson, how you wan take survive this 2024?" Little did I know that 2025 would hit different. And now we're in 2026, and abeg, the survival game don upgrade to expert mode.
This isn't one of those generic "10 tips to survive hard times" articles you done read tire. Nah. This na the real deal — what's actually working for people on ground in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and everywhere in between. I'm talking about the stuff nobody wan talk about in public but everybody dey whisper about in private.
So make we yarn this matter well well, no filter, no packaging.
π₯ The 2026 Reality Check Nobody Warned You About
First things first.
If you're reading this and you're still waiting for things to "go back to normal" — bro, sis, abeg, wake up. This IS the normal now. The Nigeria of 2020? That one don travel go history books finish. We're in 2026, and the game has completely changed. I'm not saying this to scare you. I'm saying it because pretending like "e go better" without adapting na slow poison.
I was talking to Chinedu last month. My guy for Enugu. Him tell me say him dey spend ₦45,000 on fuel monthly just to power generator for him house. Same generator wey him buy for ₦180,000 in 2023. You know how much the same generator dey cost now? ₦480,000. And that's if you even fit find am.
π‘ Real Talk: Survival in 2026 isn't about having more money. It's about making smarter moves with the little you have. I know people earning ₦80,000 monthly wey dey live better than people earning ₦300,000. The difference? Strategy. And that's what we're diving into today.
Let me break down what's changed since I first wrote about survival tactics back in November 2025:
Transportation: Lagos danfo wey be ₦200 from Ikeja to Yaba? Na ₦400-₦500 now. Keke wey be ₦100 for short distance? Try ₦200-₦300. And don't even get me started on the "one chance" situation wey don worse. Olamide, my cousin for Ojota, tell me say she no dey enter danfo again after 6pm. Na only Uber or Bolt — which means her transport budget don double.
Food: You remember when a bag of rice was ₦18,000? Currently, we're looking at ₦75,000-₦85,000 for the same bag in most markets. Tomatoes wey you fit buy with ₦500? That thing don turn luxury item. I went to Warri main market last week — one small basket of tomatoes na ₦3,500. Omo, I just look the woman, look the tomatoes, turn back comot.
Power: NEPA... ah, where I wan even start? Some areas for Lagos dey see light maybe 2-3 times per week. And when them bring the light, e fit last 30 minutes. Prosper for Ikeja tell me say him area don dey do self-rationing — them agree say each compound go put on generator based on schedule so the noise no go kill everybody.
But you know wetin pain me pass?
E no be the hardship itself. E be say some people don give up. Them don accept say "this is life" and them stop trying to find solutions. That one dey dangerous pass anything. Because the moment you stop looking for ways to survive better, you don already lose.
π Example 1: The Graduate Who Cracked the Code
Meet Ngozi. 25. Finished from University of Lagos in 2024. No job. Living with her parents for Surulere. But instead of sitting down dey wait for white-collar job, she start small. Very small. She buy phone accessories — chargers, earphones, phone cases— from Computer Village. Start selling for her area. Small small. ₦20,000 capital.
First month? She make ₦8,000 profit. Second month? ₦15,000. By the sixth month, she don open small shop for Yaba. Currently, as things stand now in January 2026, Ngozi dey clear ₦180,000-₦220,000 monthly. She even don employ two people.
What did she do differently? She no wait. She no dey complain tire. She just start. Small small. That's the survival mindset we're talking about here.
And before you tell me say "not everyone fit do business" — I hear you. But survival in 2026 no mean say you must turn entrepreneur overnight. E just mean say you need get backup plans. Plural. Not backup plan. Plans.
π° Money Survival: Beyond the "Save 30%" Advice
Okay, real talk time.
All those financial gurus wey dey tell you say "save 30% of your income" — them mean well, but them no dey live for your reality. How person wey dey earn ₦60,000 go save ₦18,000 when rent alone na ₦150,000 per year (₦12,500 monthly), feeding na at least ₦25,000, transport na ₦15,000, and we never even talk about data, toiletries, and the small small things wey dey add up?
So let me give you the actual formula wey dey work for 2026.
The 50/30/15/5 Reality Budget
This na wetin I don see work for multiple people, including myself:
50% — Absolute Essentials
Rent, feeding, transport, power. The things wey if you no pay, e go affect your survival directly. No negotiation here.
30% — Variable Expenses
Data, toiletries, clothing (when necessary), small emergencies. These ones you fit adjust month by month.
15% — Future Planning
This na your "escape fund." Not savings in the traditional sense. E be money wey you dey put aside to invest in something — skill, small business, anything wey fit increase your income later.
5% — Mental Health Money
Yes, you read am correct. 5% for your sanity. Whether na to buy small thing wey go make you happy, or hang out with friends once in a while. If you no do this one, you go break down. Trust me.
Now, I know some of una dey think "Samson, my salary no even reach this calculation." I hear you. That's why we need talk about something nobody wan hear.
The Uncomfortable Truth About Single Income
In 2026, relying on one source of income na serious risk. I no dey talk about "side hustle" in the Instagram sense where everybody dey sell hair and clothes. I dey talk about having multiple income streams wey fit sustain you if one fail.
Look at Ibrahim. My guy for Kano. Him work as banker, salary ₦120,000. But him also dey do freelance graphic design on Fiverr — extra ₦40,000-₦80,000 monthly. Him wife, Zainab, work as teacher (₦95,000) but she also dey bake small cakes and sell for weekend (₦25,000-₦45,000 monthly).
Their combined household income? Around ₦280,000-₦345,000. E be like say na plenty money, abi? But with three children and the cost of living for Kano currently, them still dey budget well well. The difference between them and many other families na say them no dey depend on only two salaries. Them get four income sources. If one reduce, the others dey cushion am.
✅ What's Actually Working (From Real People)
Digital Skills: Adebayo for Ibadan learn video editing from YouTube. Free. Three months later, him dey charge ₦15,000-₦25,000 per video. Him don do over 40 videos since him start.
Cooperative Contributions: Funke and her five friends for Akure start monthly contribution. Each person contribute ₦10,000. Every month, one person collect the ₦60,000. E be like thrift, but them dey monitor each other well. Nobody fit disappear.
Skill Swapping: Instead of paying for services, some people don dey do exchange. You need plumber? Your neighbor wey sabi plumbing go help you, then you go help am with the thing wey you sabi. This one dey save serious money.
But make I tell you something wey nobody go tell you.
Money survival for 2026 no mean say you go become millionaire. E mean say you go fit sleep at night without worrying say NEPA go seize your meter or landlord go pursue you comot. Small wins matter. If you fit pay your bills and still get small change to breathe, you dey win already.
I remember one time for December 2024, I sit down for my room calculate everything. My total income that month: ₦85,000. My expenses: ₦78,000. I remain with ₦7,000. Seven thousand naira. You know wetin I do with that ₦7,000? I no chop am. I no buy anything fancy. I use am buy domain name for one small blog idea wey I been get. That blog? Na him eventually turn to part of what become Daily Reality NG.
Sometimes, survival na about making the right small decision at the right time.
"Money no dey solve all your problems, but e dey solve the ones wey money fit solve. And for Naija currently, that one na plenty already."
— Samson Ese, Daily Reality NG
π The New Food Economy (What's Actually Working)
Omo, this food matter for Nigeria currently e no be small thing.
Last week, I visit Olamide for Lagos. My sister. She show me her food timetable for the month. I swear, this babe don turn economist. She don calculate everything down to the last tomato. And you know wetin shock me? She dey feed family of four with ₦45,000 monthly. In Lagos. For 2026.
How?
First, make I burst your bubble. If you still dey buy from supermarket, you dey waste money. Period. That Shoprite wey you like, them dey add 40-60% markup on everything. Na business. But you no need pay am if you sabi where to go.
The Real Food Markets (Where Smart People Dey Buy)
Lagos: Mile 12, Daleko, Oke-Odo. Forget Shoprite. Go where market women dey buy their own stock. A bag of rice wey dem dey sell ₦85,000 for supermarket? You fit see am for ₦72,000-₦75,000 for these markets. You just need know the right people.
Abuja: Dutse Alhaji, Wuse Market, Nyanya. Same thing. The early morning market (5am-7am) na where the real prices dey. Yes, you go wake early. But the difference in price go shock you.
Port Harcourt: Mile 1 Market, Rumuokoro. If you sabi negotiate, you go save at least ₦10,000-₦15,000 monthly on food alone.
π Example 2: The Bulk Buying Strategy
Chiamaka and her three roommates for Enugu take style. Instead of each person buying food separately, them combine their money. Every month, them contribute ₦15,000 each (total ₦60,000). One person go market buy everything in bulk.
Wetin them dey buy with ₦60,000:
- Half bag of rice (25kg): ₦38,000
- Beans (10kg): ₦7,500
- Garri (big bag): ₦4,500
- Palm oil (5 liters): ₦6,000
- Small things (Maggi, salt, etc.): ₦4,000
This thing dey last them almost two months. Do the math. Each person dey spend roughly ₦7,500 monthly on staples. Then them just dey add fresh things like vegetables, protein as e dey go. Final monthly food cost per person? Around ₦12,000-₦15,000. For Enugu. For 2026. Smart, abi?
But e get another strategy wey people no dey talk about.
The Protein Alternative Revolution
Look, meat don cost. Fish sef don cost. A kilo of chicken currently? ₦3,500-₦4,200 depending on where you dey. Beef? ₦4,000-₦5,000. But you know say you no need meat every day to survive? In fact, some of the healthiest people I know rarely chop meat.
Prosper for Benin City show me something wey change my perspective. Him wife dey cook beans and plantain combo at least four times per week. No meat. Just beans, plantain, maybe small fish (₦500-₦800). E full belly. E healthy. And e cheap.
Other alternatives wey dey work:
Eggs: Still relatively affordable. One crate (30 eggs) na around ₦3,000-₦3,500. If you use two eggs per day, that's 15 days of protein for ₦3,500. Compare that to buying meat.
Groundnut/Egusi: Nigerian soups wey get plenty protein naturally. One ₦1,000 worth of crayfish plus groundnut paste fit give you protein for days.
Small fish (iced fish): Forget that big fish wey them dey sell for ridiculous prices. The small iced fish wey fishermen dey sell for morning market? ₦500-₦1,000 worth fit cook good soup wey get protein.
And before somebody come tell me say "but I need balance diet" — true. But survival sometimes mean making tough choices. You fit eat balanced when money dey. When money no dey, you eat what go keep you alive and healthy. There's a difference.
⚠️ Critical Mistake People Dey Make: Them dey borrow money to maintain the same lifestyle them been dey live before. Brother, sister, adjust. If you been dey chop chicken three times per week and now you fit only afford am once, no go borrow money to maintain that three times. Na trap. You go enter debt wey you no go fit comot. Pride na luxury wey most of us no fit afford currently. Read more about how financial stress affects Nigerians.
One more thing about food wey I wan talk.
Jollof rice and fried rice don become party food. E no be everyday food again. And that's okay. I know say na hard pill to swallow, especially for those of us wey grow up where special rice na normal thing. But times don change. Them wey dey adapt na them dey survive better.
My personal food strategy for 2026? I don reduce rice consumption by 60%. More beans. More yam. More plantain. My body never complain, and my pocket dey thank me. Simple.
π Transport Survival Hacks
Ah, transport. The headache wey no dey finish for Naija.
If you dey Lagos, you know say your transport budget fit choke you. If you dey Abuja, same thing. Even for smaller cities like Uyo or Calabar, the transport wahala don reach everywhere. And with fuel price currently dancing samba at ₦800-₦900 per liter (depending on where you buy and whether you get connections), e no go better anytime soon.
So wetin person fit do?
The Strategic Relocation Plan
This one go pain you to hear, but make I talk am. If your rent na ₦200,000 per year and you dey spend ₦25,000 monthly on transport to your workplace, you dey waste money. Do the math. ₦25,000 × 12 months = ₦300,000 yearly on transport alone.
Godspower (yes, my guy wey dey work for one company for VI) realize this thing sharp sharp. Him been dey live for Ikorodu, paying ₦150,000 yearly rent. But him dey spend ₦30,000 monthly on transport (₦360,000 yearly). Total: ₦510,000.
Him relocate to Yaba. Rent: ₦300,000 yearly. Transport: ₦12,000 monthly (₦144,000 yearly). Total: ₦444,000. Him save ₦66,000 yearly, plus him get back at least 3 hours every day wey him been dey waste for traffic. Time na money too.
I know say some of una go say "but Yaba rent na ₦300,000? Where I go see that kind place?" Fair question. The answer dey for the next strategy.
The Roommate Economy
Look, I know say pride dey involved. You done finish school, you don work small, you want your own space. I feel you. But sometimes, survival mean swallowing that pride temporarily.
Three of my guys for Abuja — Samuel, Joshua, and Michael — them share two-bedroom flat. Rent: ₦450,000 yearly. Each person contribute ₦150,000. The flat dey Wuse 2, close to where all of them dey work. Their combined transport cost per month? Less than ₦20,000 (because sometimes them just trek or use Keke for short distances).
If each of them been wan get separate one-room self-contain far from their workplace? Them for dey pay at least ₦200,000-₦250,000 yearly each, plus heavy transport costs. The roommate arrangement don save each of them over ₦100,000 yearly.
And before you think say e no dey work, them don dey live together for almost two years now. Them get rules. Them respect each other space. E dey work.
π Example 3: The Office Bus Pool
Ada work for one company for Ikeja. Every morning, na stress to find transport. One day, she notice say at least 8 people from her area (Agege) dey work for the same company or area. She organize meeting.
Them agree to contribute ₦3,000 each monthly (8 people = ₦24,000). Them use the money hire one bus driver full-time to carry them to work and bring them back. The bus pick everybody from agreed point for 7am, drop them for work, then come pick them 5:30pm.
Before, Ada been dey spend ₦500 morning, ₦500 evening = ₦1,000 daily = ₦20,000-₦22,000 monthly (depending on how many days she work). Now? ₦3,000 monthly. Plus she no dey stress for road again. No "one chance" fear. No standing for bus stop under sun.
This model don spread to other areas. If you fit organize 6-10 people wey dey go the same direction, una fit do am too. For more ideas on practical survival strategies, check out our other guides.
The Work-From-Home Negotiation
This one no dey work for everybody, but if your job fit allow am, abeg, try negotiate. Since 2024, more Nigerian companies don dey allow hybrid work (some days office, some days home). Even if na just two days per week wey you fit work from home, that's ₦4,000-₦6,000 saved monthly on transport.
Ifeanyi for Port Harcourt negotiate with him boss. Three days office, two days remote. Him transport cost drop from ₦18,000 to ₦11,000 monthly. E no be small thing. Check our guide on how to convince your Nigerian boss to allow remote work.
The key na to approach am well. Show your boss say your productivity no go drop. Show say you fit deliver even better results. Most Nigerian bosses just wan see results. If you fit give them that assurance, some of them go gree.
"Transport no be say you must suffer. Sometimes na just about thinking differently. The person wey dey find solution na him dey always find road."
— Samson Ese, Daily Reality NG
Last thing about transport survival: invest in good walking shoes if your office dey close enough. Seriously. I know say Lagos sun fit kill person, but if you fit trek 15-20 minutes instead of paying ₦300-₦500 for short distance, that's ₦6,000-₦10,000 saved monthly. Plus e be small exercise. Your body go thank you.
Me personally? I don dey trek pass before. From Warri main market to my area na about 25 minutes walk. Instead of paying ₦200 for Keke, I just wear my comfortable slippers, put earphones, dey listen podcast as I dey waka. E don turn my thinking time sef. Some of my best ideas come when I dey trek.
⚡ Power Solutions That Won't Break You
Okay, make we talk about the elephant in the room. NEPA.
Or rather, the absence of NEPA. Because as things stand now in January 2026, if you dey see light 4-5 hours per day, you don join lucky people group. Some areas for Lagos, Abuja, and other cities dey see light maybe twice per week. And when them bring am, e fit be for 30 minutes before them carry am comot again.
The generator economy don blow. Fuel price don blow. Solar don blow (for those wey fit afford am). So wetin person wey no get ₦500,000 to drop on solar or ₦50,000 monthly on fuel go do?
The Rechargeable Everything Strategy
This na where I wan blow your mind small. You know say you fit survive without generator or solar if you plan well?
Ese (yes, another Ese — different from me o) for Sapele show me her setup. She get:
- Rechargeable fan (₦12,000-₦18,000): This thing fit run for 8-12 hours on full charge. When NEPA bring light, she charge am full. E dey take her through the night.
- Solar rechargeable lamp (₦3,500-₦5,000): Small solar panel, strong LED light. She put am for window during day, e charge. Night time, na bright light for her room.
- Power bank (20,000mAh, around ₦8,000-₦12,000): She charge am well well when light dey. E fit charge her phone like 4-5 times before e go off.
- Small rechargeable radio (₦2,500): For entertainment and news.
Total investment: Around ₦30,000-₦40,000 one-time. No fuel cost. No noise. No generator wahala. She been buy all these things gradually over 6 months, not at once.
Compare this to generator: ₦200,000-₦300,000 to buy, then ₦15,000-₦25,000 monthly on fuel, plus maintenance. You see the sense now?
π‘ Smart Move: If you must use generator, share am with your neighbor(s). Bolaji and him three neighbors for Gbagada buy one big generator together (₦280,000 split four ways = ₦70,000 each). Them also share fuel cost. Each compound use am based on agreed timetable. Everybody win. Learn more about power solutions that actually work.
The Small Solar Option
Now, if you get small money to invest (around ₦80,000-₦150,000), you fit start with mini solar setup wey go power basic things. I no dey talk about the big solar wey fit power your whole house. I dey talk about strategic solar wey go handle your most important needs.
What you need:
- One 100W or 150W solar panel (₦35,000-₦50,000)
- Small inverter (₦25,000-₦40,000)
- One battery (100Ah, around ₦35,000-₦55,000)
- Wiring and installation (₦10,000-₦15,000)
This setup fit power: your phone, laptop, one fan, and 2-3 LED bulbs. E no go run your pressing iron or your fridge, but e go cover your basic needs. And you no go dey spend money on fuel again.
Uche for Onitsha install this kind system for him room. Him say the first month wey him no need to buy fuel or worry about NEPA, him sleep like baby. The mental peace alone worth the investment. For detailed guide, check our solar panel recommendations for Nigeria.
⚠️ Warning: If you wan buy solar, make sure say you dey buy from trusted vendors. Plenty fake solar products don full market. Some go work for two months, then kasala go burst. Do your research. Ask people wey don buy before. Check online reviews. No rush am because of desperation. Also, consider checking out the CBN/BOI solar loan program if you need financing.
The Lifestyle Adjustment Nobody Wan Talk
Sometimes, survival na about changing how you live. And this one go pain plenty people, but make I talk am.
You no need AC. Yes, I said it. I know say heat fit kill for Nigeria, especially during dry season. But unless you get serious health condition, you fit survive with fan. AC na luxury wey most of us no fit afford currently. One medium AC fit consume like 1000-1500 watts. That's more power than your entire house lights combined.
Me sef, I stop using AC for my room since mid-2024. I just dey use ceiling fan plus rechargeable hand fan when e too hot. I no go lie say e easy, but my power bill drop, and when NEPA no bring light, I no dey suffer because I no dey depend on big power consumption.
Other power-saving adjustments wey dey work:
- Replace all your bulbs with LED. They use way less power and last longer.
- Iron your clothes in bulk once per week when NEPA bring light or when you go someone place wey get stable power.
- Keep your fridge on generator schedule. Most fridges fit keep things cold for 4-6 hours after you off them.
- Use gas cooker instead of electric stove. Gas cheaper than the electricity wey electric stove go consume.
I know some of these things sound like going backwards in life. But this na the reality of 2026. We either adapt or we suffer. Na your choice.
πΌ Side Income Strategies (Real Numbers)
Oya, make we talk the thing wey everybody wan hear. Money wey you fit make on the side.
But before you think say I go give you those yeye "make money online" schemes wey people dey sell, calm down. Everything I go talk here na things I either do myself or people close to me don test and confirm say e dey work. With real numbers. No packaging.
Digital Skills Wey Dey Pay Currently
Look, I no go lie say digital skills no require work. Them require serious work. But if you fit dedicate 2-3 hours daily for 2-3 months to learn, you fit start earning.
Content Writing/Copywriting: This na my own entry point into online money back in 2016. You no need degree in English. You just need sabi how to write clearly and follow brief. Current rates for Nigerian freelance writers: ₦5,000-₦15,000 per 1000 words (depending on your experience and quality). If you fit write 3-4 articles per week, that's ₦60,000-₦180,000 monthly on the side. Learn more about freelancing strategies that work.
Graphic Design: With Canva Pro (₦7,000 monthly) or even the free version, plus small Photoshop knowledge, you fit dey design flyers, social media posts, logos. Charge ₦3,000-₦10,000 per design depending on complexity. Do 2-3 designs per day? You don make money.
Video Editing: With apps like CapCut (free) or InShot, you fit edit videos for people. Simple wedding video edit: ₦15,000-₦30,000. Birthday video: ₦8,000-₦15,000. Business promo: ₦10,000-₦25,000. Just 2-3 jobs per week fit give you extra ₦80,000-₦150,000 monthly.
π Example 4: The Evening Hustle
Musa work as civil servant for Kaduna. Him salary: ₦85,000 monthly. But him learn video editing for YouTube during lockdown period. Every evening after work (7pm-10pm), him dey edit videos for clients. Weekend, him fit do like 4-5 videos.
Him charges:
- Simple birthday/event video: ₦10,000
- Wedding video (basic edit): ₦25,000
- Corporate/business video: ₦15,000-₦20,000
- YouTube video edit: ₦5,000-₦8,000
Him average monthly side income: ₦120,000-₦180,000. More than him salary. Him tell me say if not for this side hustle, him for don relocate go village by now. The money from him salary alone no fit carry am for Kaduna currently.
Key point: Musa no leave him job. Him just strategize well. Him side hustle no dey affect him work performance. That's the balance you need find. Check out more business ideas you can start with small capital.
The Physical Side Hustles Wey Still Dey Work
Not everybody like computer work. Some people prefer physical hustle. I respect that. Here are options:
Phone Accessories Reselling: Buy chargers, earphones, screen protectors in bulk from dealers for Ikeja Computer Village or your local electronics market. Sell for your area, your workplace, online. Markup na around 40-60%. ₦30,000 capital fit give you ₦12,000-₦18,000 profit monthly if you dey hustle well.
Food/Snacks Business: Damilola for Ibadan dey fry puff-puff and sell for her office. Every morning, she carry 100-150 pieces. Sell everything before 12pm. Cost of making 100 puff-puff: around ₦2,500. She sell each for ₦50. That's ₦5,000 revenue, ₦2,500 profit daily. Five days per week = ₦12,500 weekly = ₦50,000 monthly pure profit.
Laundry Service: If you sabi wash clothes well and you get space, offer laundry service for your neighbors or colleagues. Charge ₦1,500-₦2,500 per basket depending on what dey inside. Do 10-15 baskets per week, that's ₦60,000-₦150,000 monthly.
✅ Survival Mindset for Side Hustles
1. **Start small:** No need big capital to start. Even ₦5,000-₦10,000 fit start something.
2. **Be consistent:** Side hustle no be "when I feel like." Treat am like second job. Dedicate specific hours.
3. **Reinvest profits initially:** For the first 2-3 months, put most of your profit back into the business to grow am. Chop the money later.
4. **Don't quit your main job yet:** Until your side income stable and exceeding your salary for at least 6 months, hold that job tight. Survival na about security, not risk.
One thing I wan add here wey plenty people no dey talk about: side hustles go stress you. E no easy to work 8 hours for your main job then come home do another 2-3 hours. Your body go tire. You go feel like quitting.
But you know wetin? When that extra ₦50,000-₦100,000 enter your account at the end of the month, when you fit pay that bill wey been dey worry you, when you fit help your mama small without shakara, you go know say the stress worth am.
Survival in 2026 na sacrifice. No two ways about am. For more practical strategies, read about apps that pay Nigerians real money.
π§ Mental Health Survival (The Silent Struggle)
Okay, this part go pain me to write, but e necessary.
All the strategies I don talk — money, food, transport, power, side hustles — them important. But if your head no correct, nothing go work. And this na the part wey most Nigerians dey ignore until e too late.
November 2024, I sit for my room one night just dey cry. I no even know why I dey cry sef. Everything just come overwhelm me at once. The pressure to pay bills, to help family, to keep my site running, to maintain relationships, to smile like say everything dey okay when inside, I don nearly break.
That night, I realize say survival no be only about money. E be about keeping your sanity intact.
The Mental Load Wey Nobody Dey Discuss
If you dey work, dey do side hustle, dey manage relationships, dey support family, dey try maintain your sanity for this crazy economy — you be superhero. But even superheroes dey tire.
Fatima for Jos tell me something wey hit me hard. She say: "Samson, sometimes I just wan sleep and no wake up. Not because I wan die o. Just because I tire to dey think about how I go survive tomorrow."
You know how many Nigerians dey feel this way currently? Plenty. But we no dey talk about am because society go call us weak. Learn more about why Nigerians don't talk about mental health.
⚠️ Signs You Need to Check Yourself: If you dey wake up tired every morning even after sleep, if small thing dey vex you nowadays, if you no dey enjoy things wey you been dey enjoy before, if you dey avoid people, if food no dey sweet you again, if your mind dey always scattered — my brother, my sister, you need pause. This na survival issue too. Your mental health na part of your survival toolkit. For practical help, check our guide on managing stress in Nigeria.
Free/Cheap Ways to Protect Your Mental Health
I know say therapy expensive for Nigeria. Most therapists dey charge ₦15,000-₦30,000 per session. If you fit afford am, please do. But if you no fit, here are things wey fit help:
Talk to Someone: E no need be therapist. Just one trusted friend or family member wey fit listen without judgment. Sometimes, just to yarn wetin dey worry you fit reduce the load for your head.
Take Small Breaks: Even if na 10 minutes per day wey you go just sit down, close your eyes, breathe. No phone. No TV. Just you and your breath. E dey help reset your mind.
Reduce Social Media: Real talk — Instagram and Twitter fit worsen your mental state. Everybody dey post their highlight reel while you dey compare am with your behind-the-scenes struggle. Cut down your screen time. Your mental health go thank you.
Find One Thing Wey Dey Make You Happy: E fit be music, e fit be reading, e fit be playing football, e fit be cooking. Just one thing wey when you do am, you go forget your wahala small. Make sure say you do that thing at least twice per week.
π Example 5: The Sunday Reset Routine
Tamuno for Port Harcourt almost break down for 2025. The guy just dey work, work, work. No rest. No fun. Just survival mode 24/7. Him wife see am, intervene.
Them create "Sunday Reset." Every Sunday afternoon (3pm-6pm), them no do anything wey relate to hustle or survival. Them just:
- Play music
- Cook together (even if na just small rice)
- Watch one movie
- Talk about non-serious things
- Laugh
Tamuno tell me say this three hours per week don save him mental health. Him no be the same anxious, stressed person again. Him dey cope better with all the survival wahala because e get that one day wey him mind dey rest.
And make I add this one: e dey okay to no be okay. You no need pretend say everything dey alright when e no dey alright. The people wey truly care about you go understand. The ones wey no understand, abeg, loro yen o concern you currently (that thing no concern you).
"Your mental health na your greatest wealth. If you lose am while you dey chase survival, you don lose everything."

❤️ Relationships in Survival Mode
This one go pain plenty people, but make I talk am.
Survival mode dey test relationships. Whether na romantic relationship, friendship, or family — when money tight, wahala dey follow. And for 2026, the stress don break many relationships wey suppose strong.
Obinna for Owerri break up with him girlfriend of three years last year. The reason? She been dey expect the same level of dates, gifts, and spending wey them been dey do for 2023. But Obinna income never change while prices don double. Him try explain, but she no gree understand. She say him no dey try again.
That matter pain me because both of them no wrong. She get expectations based on wetin been dey happen before. Him dey try survive with wetin him get. But them no fit meet for middle. That's the reality of relationships for survival season.
The Conversation Wey Most People Dey Avoid
If you dey relationship — whether dating or married — una need sit down talk money matter. Like, real talk. No packaging. No forming. Just honest conversation about:
- How much each person dey earn
- Wetin una expenses be
- How una go share bills (if una dey live together)
- Wetin una fit afford and wetin una no fit afford currently
- How una go adjust expectations based on reality
Ijeoma and Chukwudi for Enugu get this talk early for 2025. Them sit down, remove phone, lock door, yarn everything. Chukwudi tell am say him salary don reduce from ₦150,000 to ₦110,000. Him side hustle dey struggle. Ijeoma sef open up say her business no dey move like before.
Together, them create new budget wey fit their new reality. Them cut down on unnecessary expenses. Them stop going out every weekend. Them start cooking together at home instead of ordering food. Them even move to cheaper apartment to save ₦60,000 yearly on rent.
You know wetin happen? Their relationship actually get stronger. Because them face the reality together instead of pretending like say everything normal. Read more about why relationships struggle during hard times.
The Friendship Filter
Survival season dey show you who your real friends be. And e no be about who get money to dash you. E be about who go understand when you say "guy, I no fit come out today. Money no dey."
My circle of friends reduce by like 60% between 2024 and 2025. Not because we fight. Just because some people no understand say I no fit dey spend ₦5,000-₦10,000 every weekend on hangouts when I dey struggle to pay bills. The ones wey understand? Them still dey around. We go hang for my house, cook together, gist, laugh. No money involved. Just genuine friendship.
If your friends dey pressure you to spend money wey you no get, or them dey make you feel bad because you dey cut cost — my brother, my sister, those people no be your friends. Real friends go understand your situation and adjust with you. Learn about toxic friendships to let go.
π‘ Real Talk About Family Pressure: This one na serious matter for many Nigerians. Your family go expect you to contribute, to send money, to help out. And yes, family important. But if helping your family dey kill you financially, if you dey borrow to send them money, if you dey skip meals so you fit send home — that one no be help again. That na sacrifice wey go destroy you. E dey okay to tell your family say you dey struggle too. E dey okay to say "this month, I no fit send anything." Your survival come first. If you die or break down, who you wan help again?
The Balance Wey Dey Hard to Find
I no go lie — balancing survival and relationships na one of the hardest things for 2026. Because humans need connection. We need love. We need friendship. But all these things require time, energy, and sometimes money wey we dey struggle to get.
So wetin be the solution?
Communicate. Be honest. Set boundaries. And surround yourself with people wey go understand your reality. If your partner, your friends, or even your family no fit understand say you dey survive too, then maybe na time to reevaluate those relationships.
Survival no mean say you go cut off everybody. E just mean say you go prioritize people wey truly matter and wey truly understand wetin you dey go through.

πͺ Seven Encouraging Words From Me
Look, I know say this article long. I know say some of the things I talk don make you feel somehow — maybe discouraged, maybe overwhelmed. But make I leave you with these words:
1. You're Stronger Than You Think: If you don survive everything wey 2024 and 2025 throw at you, you fit survive 2026 too. You get am inside you.
2. Small Progress Still Be Progress: You no need make ₦1 million this month. Even if na ₦5,000 extra you fit make, celebrate am. E dey add up.
3. Your Current Situation No Be Your Final Destination: I been broke for 2022. For 2023, things better small. For 2024, e even better. Now for 2026, I fit breathe. E no happen overnight, but e happen. Yours go happen too.
4. You're Not Alone in This Struggle: Millions of Nigerians dey face the same thing you dey face. Some don even get am worse. But we dey survive together.
5. One Smart Move Fit Change Everything: That side hustle you start today fit become your main income tomorrow. That ₦10,000 you invest in learning skill fit open door to ₦100,000 monthly. Just start.
6. Rest No Be Laziness: If you tired, rest. If you need break, take am. You no be machine. Taking care of yourself na part of survival strategy.
7. This Too Shall Pass: Nigeria don see worse times and we survive am. This current season hard, yes. But e no go last forever. Just hold on small.
π― Key Takeaways
✅ Survival in 2026 requires adaptation, not just hoping things will get better. The old strategies don't work anymore.
✅ Use the 50/30/15/5 budget formula: 50% essentials, 30% variables, 15% future planning, 5% mental health money.
✅ Buy food from real markets, not supermarkets. Bulk buying with friends/roommates can cut food costs by 40-50%.
✅ Consider strategic relocation to reduce transport costs. Sometimes paying slightly higher rent but saving on transport makes more sense.
✅ Invest in rechargeable devices (fans, lamps, power banks) instead of running generator daily. Initial cost: ₦30,000-₦40,000. Saves thousands monthly.
✅ Multiple income streams are essential. Your main job should never be your only source of income in 2026.
✅ Mental health is part of survival. If your mind breaks down, everything else collapses. Take care of it.
✅ Honest communication saves relationships. Talk about money matters openly with your partner, family, and friends.
✅ Small progress is still progress. Every ₦1,000 saved, every new skill learned, every small win counts. Celebrate them.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much money do I realistically need to survive in Lagos in 2026?
For a single person living alone in a modest one-room apartment in areas like Yaba, Surulere, or Ikeja, you need minimum 120,000 to 150,000 Naira monthly to cover rent (portion), feeding, transport, power, and basic necessities. If you share apartment with roommates and cut costs aggressively, you can survive on 80,000 to 100,000 Naira monthly, but it requires serious discipline and sacrifice. For families, multiply these figures by number of dependents and add at least 40 percent for unexpected expenses.
Is it better to keep my regular job or focus on side hustles full-time?
Keep your regular job until your side hustle income consistently exceeds your salary for at least 6 months. Even if your side hustle is bringing good money, job security matters in uncertain times. The ideal situation is to have both running simultaneously. Only quit your job when your side income is stable, predictable, and at least 50 percent higher than your current salary to account for months when business may be slow.
What are the cheapest cities to live in Nigeria currently?
Based on current cost of living analysis, Makurdi in Benue State, Lokoja in Kogi State, Jalingo in Taraba State, and Lafia in Nasarawa State are among the most affordable Nigerian cities. Rent, food, and transport costs are 40 to 60 percent lower than Lagos or Abuja. However, job opportunities are also fewer, so you need to have remote work or established business before relocating. Other relatively affordable options include Osogbo, Ilorin, and Akure.
How can I start a side hustle with zero capital?
Focus on skill-based side hustles that require only your time and knowledge. Content writing, social media management, virtual assistance, online tutoring, and graphic design using free tools like Canva require zero capital. You can also offer services like laundry, hair braiding, or errand running in your neighborhood. Another option is becoming a middleman or agent for products or services, earning commission without buying stock upfront. The key is leveraging what you already know or can learn quickly through free online resources.
